Ties to Congress Could Help Carlyle’s New Lobbyist
The Carlyle Group announced today that it hired David Marchick as its first in-house lobbyist (see article from DealBook). As the Carlyle Group and other buyout firms face the possibilities of tax increases and greater scrutiny on the basis of national security, it is expected that other large private equity firms will follow suit. The results of an IntellectSpace Knowledge Map of the connections between The Carlyle Group and the United States Congress suggest that Carlyle’s ties to Congress and other seats of government could be beneficial to their newly hired lobbyist.
A first connection is through Duratek Inc, where Carlyle Co-Founders Daniel D’aniello and William Convoy Jr are both former Directors, as was Ogden Reid (former Congressman from New York, U.S. Ambassador to Israel and current Chairman of the Council of American Ambassadors).
Another noteworthy connection exists between Edward Mathias (Managing Director at Carlyle as well as a Member of The Board of Dean’s Advisors at Harvard University) and Daniel Glickman (former Representative from Kansas who was on the House Intelligence Committee, Secretary of Agriculture under President Bill Clinton and former Director of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard from 2002-2004). It is quite plausible that Glickman and Mathias know each other from their time at Harvard.
A final notable connection involves G Allen Andreas and Andrew Young. Andreas is a Director of Carlyle’s European Advisory Board as well as the former President and Chairman/CEO of Archer Daniels Midland Co (ADM). Young, a former civil rights activist with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, was a Representative from Georgia and UN Ambassador as well Mayor of Atlanta. Young is also a former Director at ADM.
With these connections to Congress, as well as its connections to other U.S. government agencies ( see NewsVisual article), Carlyle’s new lobbyist could be quite successful.
