Strong Ties Help Motorola and Emerson Seal Deal
Was Emerson Electric Co the early favorite when Motorola Inc offered to sell its Embedded Communications Computing business? According to the information from this IntellectSpace Knowledge Map the answer seems to be a resounding “yes”. Emerson agreed to buy the business for $350 million on Friday (see article from MarketWatch.com). We created an IntellectSpace Knowledge Map to determine if the two companies had any ties and were surprised by just how strong the ties were.
From this Knowledge Map we see that the ties between Motorola and Emerson are through AT&T Corp, Quaker Oats (a unit of PepsiCo), with the strongest ties through Anheuser Busch. Douglas Warner III, a Director at Motorola, currently shares a directorship at Anheuser Busch with Vernon Loucks Jr, Carlos Gonzalez, August Busch III, and Charles Knight, all of whom are currently Directors at Emerson, with Knight being a former President, Chairman/CEO and currently Chairman Emeritus.
Another notable connection is present through telecommunications giant AT&T. David Dorman (Director at Motorola) was a former Chairman/CEO at AT&T, where he worked alongside August Busch and Charles Knight and most likely knew Randall Stephenson, the current Chairman/CEO.
A final connection involves Judy Lewent and Vernon Loucks, both former Directors at Quaker Oats during overlapping periods. Lewent is currently a Director at Motorola and Loucks has been a Director at Emerson since 1979.
With these multiple solid ties it is highly plausible that both companies were in constant contact and communication from the moment Motorola decided to sell Embedded Communications Computing.
