PerkinElmer Connections to Viacell Chairman May Have Been Key to Deal

Screenhunter_10_oct_02_0827PerkinElmer’s ties to Viacell Chairman Vaughn M Kailian may have been instrumental in Monday’s announcement of an acquisition. In a deal valued estimated to be $300 million, PerkinElmer Inc said that it has agreed to purchase Viacell Inc in the hopes that it will expand the company's presence in neonatal and prenatal markets (see article from the Boston Business Journal). After constructing an IntellectSpace Knowledge Map, we found that Viacell’s Chairman held the connections that may have proven key to this deal.

As illustrated in this Knowledge Map, Kailian serves as Chairman of Elixir Pharmaceuticals, where Gregory D Perry (SVP Finance and Business Development at PerkinElmer until 2002) also presently holds the role of Chief Financial Officer. Though Perry is no longer with PerkinElmer, it’s likely that he remains knowledgeable as to the company’s business practices and also retains contact with many of his former colleagues.

Two of PerkinElmer’s Directors may also have crossed paths in recent years with Kailian. Robert F Friel and James C Mullen (Directors of PerkinElmer) currently serve as Directors of Millennium Pharmaceuticals and the Biotech Industry Organization, respectively. Kailian is shown to have recent past board affiliations with each, so it is possible that he is acquainted Friel and Mullen.

These valuable connections may have been useful for PerkinElmer in leveraging an offer.
