UPDATE: GE’s Share Price Shows Very Slight Increase over Last Two Weeks
(NewsVisual, powered by IntellectSpace) -- The general sense of cluelessness as to where the American economy was headed seemed to be reflected in the anemic fluctuations in the stock price of General Electric Co (NYSE: GE) over the last two weeks.
When NewsVisual last reported on the company on Jan 18, GE had just reported fourth-quarter 2007 earnings of $6.8 billion, which was up 15 percent from the fourth-quarter 2006. In addition, its Q4 earnings increase was largely driven by a 27 percent increase in global revenues.
On Jan 18, the markets appeared to relish GE’s earnings news, sending its share price up from the previous day’s close of $33.21 to $34.33 in early afternoon trading (12:14pm ET).
Since then on Jan 30, however, the stock price was only modestly higher at $34.76 in after-the-bell trading (5:31pm ET).
The uncertainty among investors could reflect their concerns over recessionary tendencies in the entire global economy.
Still, the IntellectSpace Knowledge Map that NewsVisual created shows that members of GE’s Board of Directors have strong involvement with the global economy.
Indeed, seven of GE’s Directors serve on the boards of companies that compete overseas. The following are the most noteworthy ones because of their connections to these global companies:
Director Douglas A Warner also serves on the boards of Motorola Inc and, more importantly perhaps, The Bechtel Group Inc, which has a huge International market that builds infrastructure in overseas cities.
And Director Robert W Lane would undoubtedly be knowledgeable about the agricultural sector overseas, since he is the CEO/Chairman of Deere & Co that sells much of the farming equipment that tills the earth throughout the world.
Given its enormous reach into International markets, Director Dr James I Cash Jr board connections with Microsoft most probably provide him with keen insights into trade issues in emerging markets, not to mention the finer details of how business is really conducted in foreign countries.
Likewise, Director Andrea Jung, the CEO/Chairman of Avon Products Inc, would know a great deal about business issues in foreign countries, since that’s a huge part of Avon’s business. And her seat in the Apple Inc board room probably helps to educate her on the global business issues that confront technology companies.
